Getting the drop right

Over a kitchen island, the usual
advice is to leave roughly 30 to 36 inches between the countertop and the
bottom of the fixture — high enough to work under, low enough to feel
intentional. Over a dining table, the same range tends to hold, measured from
the tabletop. In an entryway or stairwell with a high ceiling, the fixture
generally wants to sit at the height a person sees it, not tucked up near the
ceiling where it disappears. Treat all of these as starting points, then stand
back and look; the room usually tells you.

Where adjustability matters
most

Ceilings that aren't the
standard eight feet. Islands and tables that are longer or taller than average.
Rooms where you know the furniture is going to move. And rentals or first
homes, where the fixture may well outlive the room it was bought for.
